SUMMER 2019 STF Travel Courses
INFORMATIONAL MEETING IN CORDELIA-THOMAS:
12:15 PM 6 February 2019
This Summer several courses are being offered by faculty in the School of Theology & Formation. Both can ‘count’ toward the theology concertation of the MDIv, for the MA-TS, one has an option of the core Wesley course, and the one can count for the SF concentration or degree.
NOTE: The following material is preliminary,but very close to a ‘final’ version of information.
STF is offering two travel courses this summer.

SF650/CS650: Pilgrimage: Formation & Morality (TH601:Wesley course option)
This course is a travel course to Wales and England. During the trip students will visit various pilgrimage sites and will walk the final portion (approximately 20 kilometers) of the way into Canterbury. To see full itinerary contact: Kim Sowers, STF Office or come to planning meeting.
This course involves overnight, international travel and significant walking over uneven ground.
CONTENT / ACTIVITES:
• Emphasis is placed on the role pilgrimage has played in Christianity and, in particular, how that meaning changed in Protestantism.
• In addition, the trip includes stops at very early Methodist chapels, Francis Asbury’s home in Wales, and Wesley’s chapel in London.
• Also: an option to take at the same time TH601, the core course on Wesleyan theology, is available. The additional cost is for tuition; there is no additional travel cost.SATISFIES:
• SF concentration requirements;
• Requirement of STF course for MDiv or MA-TS (ethics / theology / church history)PREREQURISITES: None

TRAVEL INFORMATION:
• Students must arrange on their own to arrive in Manchester by 2 pm on the first day.
• Students may depart from London on the final day or after as they choose to arrange. Must have valid passport with six month remaining from date of return to U.S.
• As with any Asbury travel course, complete adherence to the Ethos standards is expected throughout the trip (from Manchester airport to London airport).
• Students from outside U.S. must arrange any visas necessary for entry into Great Britain and back to U.S. Non-U.S. students must have visas allowing re-entry into U.S.COST:
• IN-COUNTRY COST:
o Tours, admissions, room, in-country travel, some meals: ≈ $1949 (this is approximate because it depends on the final enrollment [if 14 – as opposed to 10 — students participate the cost goes down by about $110]
PLEASE NOTE: If we understand correctly, normal student aid cannot be used for travel; some meal and any books, souvenirs, etc. are additional.
• FLIGHT: Depends on location of departure, but approximately $950 as of January.
• TRIP INSURANCE (encouraged)
• HEALTH INSURANCE (required)
• TUITION IS SEPERATE COST

CS637: Rural Community and Moral ConcernsThe course is designed to serve persons who anticipate serving in rural areas or who have interest in Appalachian & trans-Appalachian culture. That said, persons from other areas, including out of the U.S., can tailor assignments to serve needs.
This course involves some overnight travel and significant walking over uneven ground.

CONTENT / ACTIVITES:
• This course involves travel through Kentucky and Ohio to examine how rural communities in the U.S. function and what recent socio-economic changes mean for ministry.• The anticipated sites for visiting include pre-colonial Native American arche3logical site, Amish farm, high-tech farm, thoroughbred farm, mining operation, ‘organic’ / local food farm, and rural churches.

• Requirement of STF course for MDiv or MA-TS (ethics / theology / church history)PREREQURISITES: None
DATES: 13 – 20 JUNE 2019

TRAVEL INFORMATION:
• Students must arrange on their own to arrive in Wilmore by 10 am on the first day.
• As with any Asbury travel course, complete adherence to the Ethos standards is expected throughout the trip.
• Because the class visits some very conservative religious communities, clothing during all travel must be modest.COST:
IN-COUNTRY COST:
o Tours, admissions, room, travel are cove red by grant money.
o Meals are to be paid by the students; cash may be necessary in some communities.
PLEASE NOTE: If we understand correctly, normal student aid cannot be used for travel; some meal and any books, souvenirs, etc. are additional.
HEALTH INSURANCE (required)
TUITION IS SEPERATE COST
